Bunker adjustment factor (BAF ) + ETS
bunker surcharge or BAF(bunker adjustment factor) refers to the floating part of freight charges which represents additional paymens which depends on oil prices.

Directive (EU) 2023/959, which has entered into force in the EU, introduces significant changes to the regulation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as of 1 January 2025. In addition, Regulation (EU) 2023/1805 steers maritime transport towards a broader adoption of renewable and low-carbon fuel solutions.
The expansion of the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) will be implemented in phases, with full coverage of emissions required by 2026. From January 2025 onwards, shipping companies must reduce the greenhouse gas emission intensity of their operations by 2% compared to the 2020 reference level. This requirement can be met either by using alternative fuels or by paying the mandatory compensation stipulated by the regulation.
From 2026, the emissions calculation methodology will be extended to include methane (CHâ‚„) and nitrous oxide (Nâ‚‚O) emissions in addition to carbon dioxide (COâ‚‚), thereby increasing the scope and accuracy of reporting obligations.
